Beyond the 4 minute shower
We’ve been handing out sand timers for 30 years. Here’s why that’s not enough.
Most people already know long showers waste water and energy. Knowing isn’t the problem. Turning that knowledge into a lasting habit is, especially for a routine as personal as a shower.
In my latest piece for New Zealand Water Review, I argue that utilities need to move beyond awareness campaigns and toward tools that give people real-time feedback, personalised nudges and a clear sense of their own progress, right where the habit happens.
There’s an energy story here too. Every litre of hot water saved is energy saved, and timing matters as much as volume. With 57% of showers taking place during peak grid periods, shorter showers mean less hot water demand right when the network is under the most strain. That makes shower behaviour one of the most overlooked peak load reduction opportunities available to energy utilities.
The sand timer started the conversation. It’s time to think about what comes next. 👉 Read the full article:https://nzwaterreview.partica.online/nz-water-review/vol-3-ed-3/flipbook/10/
